<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Marine Corps’ first squadron of F-35C Lightning II stealth fighter jets is now fully capable of deploying on board aircraft carriers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314, also known as the Black Knights, announced initial operational capability for the F-35C variant of the joint strike fighter in a press release on Tuesday, calling the platform “the most advanced stealth fighter jets the world has ever seen.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">VMFA-314, part of Marine Aircraft Group 11 and based out of Miramar, California, <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2020/01/24/first-marine-corps-f-35c-hits-the-fleet-in-california/">received its first F-35C</a> in January. The squadron has spent most of the past year preparing pilots and maintenance personnel to operate, maintain and repair the new jets, which feature significantly upgraded stealth capabilities, avionics and sensors from the legacy F/A-18A-C Hornets the squadron retired earlier in 2020.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Achieving initial operating capability means VMFA-314 has met <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-military/2020/03/25/a-headquarters-marine-is-the-first-service-member-covid-19-case-in-the-pentagon/" target=_blank>Headquarters Marine Corps’ </a>standards for the number of trained Marines, mission-ready aircraft and trained pilots for deployment, according to the press release.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Our maintenance department was critical to the success of IOC,” Lt. Col. Duncan French, the squadron’s executive officer, said in a news release. “In addition to accepting and inspecting the multiple aircraft that arrived throughout the year, the Marines maintained a high level of aircraft readiness. Those mission capable aircraft allowed the pilots to train in the appropriate missions required of IOC, as well as contributed towards the readiness metrics of IOC.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The new carrier-based jets will enable the Marine Corps to continue deploying strike-capable jets on Navy aircraft carriers to support global combat operations for the foreseeable future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until now, the Marine Corps has utilized <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/air/2019/06/12/the-marine-corps-no-1-priority-for-the-f-35-involves-a-rough-landing-in-hot-environments/">the F-35B</a>, which offers a short-take-off-and-vertical-landing capability. This variant is designed to take off from short runways and flat-decked amphibious assault ships.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-navy/2020/06/18/these-f-35-pilots-are-the-first-to-graduate-from-topgun/" target=_blank>The F-35C</a> is designed explicitly for use on aircraft carriers. Its larger wings and stronger landing gear make it better suited for the catapult launches and arrestments used on carriers, and its wingtips fold for better storage on deck.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-35C also holds more fuel than other variants of the single-seat jet, with nearly 20,000 pounds of internal fuel available for long-range flying.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Navy’s <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2019/03/01/this-is-whats-going-on-with-the-navys-f-35c-program/">Argonauts of Strike Fighter Squadron 147</a> achieved initial operating capability with the F-35C in February 2019.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The successful transition of the Black Knights to the F-35C culminating in this IOC declaration is a testament to the squadron’s distinguished legacy of pioneering new aircraft,” Lt. Col. Brendan Walsh, commanding officer of VMFA-314, said in the news release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Black Knights’ legacy includes being the first in the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing to transition to jet aircraft with the introduction of the F9F Panther in 1952.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 1961, the squadron was the first in the Marine Corps to receive the F-4B Phantom, and in 1982 it was the first unit in the Department of the Navy to fly the F/A-18 Hornet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">French called the unit’s newest achievement a “significant milestone,” saying: “The F-35C’s unique capabilities, compared to the F-35B and legacy aircraft, provide the Marine Corps with a complementary increase in combat projection and the ability to operate from the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carriers.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The agency responsible for the internet, GPS and stealth aircraft has produced a whole lot of weird in the 62 years since its foundation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For every one of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s wild successes, there seem to be a plethora of wild failures – projects like mechanical elephants or telepathy research. What makes DARPA so unique is its ability to go outside the red tape of bureaucracy to innovate. DARPA isn’t subject to the same acquisition rules as other agencies, which means it has fewer restrictions on the scientists and innovators it can hire and the salaries it can offer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The agency also has fewer financial limitations, enabling it to invest in longshot projects with the hopes they’ll pay off – they’re basically the military’s innovative venture capitalists.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are some of the more interesting projects to come out of DARPA’s “high-risk, high-reward” environment.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Plant-eating robots</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perhaps the most aptly named project on this list, the Energy Autonomous Tactical Robot program sought to create robots that could feed off plants just as animals do. <a href="https://www.robotictechnologyinc.com/images/upload/file/Website%20Input%20EATR%20Overview.pdf">EATR</a> would have enabled robots to remain in surveillance or defensive positions without resupply much longer than humans or robots with more limited power sources.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We completely understand the public’s concern about futuristic robots feeding on the human population, but that is not our mission,” Cyclone Power Technologies CEO Harry Schoell said in a press release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before the project stopped development in 2015, its engineers estimated that EATR would be able to travel 100 miles for every 150 pounds of biomass consumed.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Houses that repair themselves</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine soldiers fashioning buildings and fortifications out of lightweight scaffolds instead of plywood, two-by-fours, and heavy sandbags. Then, those scaffolds quickly begin to fill in with durable material all on their own. And when that material is damaged, it grows right back to where it was.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s the goal of DARPA’s <a href="https://www.darpa.mil/news-events/2016-08-05">Engineering Living Materials program</a> – to create building materials that can be grown where needed and repair themselves when damaged. As researchers make progress with 3D printed organs and tissues, DARPA hopes to use similar technologies to create hybrid materials that can shape and support the growth of engineered cells.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Instead of shipping finished materials, we can ship precursors and rapidly grow them on site using local resources. And, since the materials will be alive, they will be able to respond to changes in their environment and heal themselves in response to damage,” project manager Justin Gallivan said.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Lab-grown blood</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Blood pharming is the process of creating red blood cells from cell sources in a lab rather than inside a human body. DARPA’s Blood Pharming program was projected to increase the efficiency of production and lower the high costs associated with growing red blood cells.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If completely successful, the program would have greatly increased access to transfusable blood for soldiers and hospitals around the world and reduced the risk of disease transmission during a transfusion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The program was successful in decreasing the cost of synthetic blood from over $90,000 down to under $5,000 per unit, a 2013 <a href="https://www.darpa.mil/news-events/2013-11-12">press release</a> stated, but new information has not been released since, and the program was not listed in recent budget documents.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Cyborg insects</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unmanned Aerial Vehicles may be all the rage, but they’re clunky and require people to design and assemble every piece. What if there were a way to piggyback sensors on flying creatures for free?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DARPA’s spy bugs were part of a 2006 project that wanted to implant transmitters in insects to use them for surveillance. The <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20071008203450/http:/www.darpa.gov/mto/programs/himems/index.html">Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems program</a> was run by teams from the University of Michigan and Cornell University.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within a few years, researchers had developed interfaces capable of controlling insects’ actions. And if plain old spy bugs weren’t wild enough, the insects eventually received nuclear power as well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2009, Cornell engineers revealed a prototype of a radioactively-powered transmitter for the cyborg insects. Nickle-23 isotopes would provide ample power to the sensors and transmitters the bugs might carry while remaining harmless to humans.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Brain implants for PTSD</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DARPA doesn’t just focus on cool gadgets for fighting wars. The agency also funds research on solutions for the negative effects war can have on soldiers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Systems-Based Neurotechnology for Emerging Therapies program is tasked with creating “an implanted, closed-loop diagnostic and therapeutic system for treating, and possibly even curing, neuropsychiatric illness,” according to <a href="https://www.darpa.mil/program/systems-based-neurotechnology-for-emerging-therapies" target=_blank>a DARPA press release</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Basically, the program wants to make a brain implant that will help soldiers struggling with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, substance abuse, and more.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because of the ramifications of such a device, SUBNETS has special ethics experts to help them create a safe piece of neurotechnology.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. Robotic infantry mules</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Heavy lifting is one of the largest challenges affecting troops’ health and performance. Recognizing the affect the weight of soldiers’ loads can have on them, DARPA began working with robotics company Boston Dynamics to create the <a href="https://www.darpa.mil/program/legged-squad-support-system">Legged Squad Support System</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Capable of carrying 400 pounds, the LS3 is intended to deploy with an infantry squad. DARPA’s website states the program’s goal as “to develop a robot that will go through the same terrain the squad goes through without hindering the squad’s mission.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. Nuke-propelled spaceship</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DARPA also invests in researching space travel. <a href="https://www.darpa.mil/attachments/DARAPA60_publication-no-ads.pdf">Project Orion</a> is a program from 1958 intended to research a new means of spaceship propulsion. This hypothetical model of propulsion relied on nuclear bomb detonations to power a craft forward and was supposedly capable of hitting astonishing speeds.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, DARPA officials were worried about nuclear fallout, and when the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 outlawed detonations of nuclear weapons in outer space, the project was dropped.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. Mechanical elephants</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the 1960s, DARPA began researching vehicles that would enable troops and equipment to move more freely in the dense terrain of Vietnam.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the footsteps of Hannibal before them, DARPA researchers decided that elephants could be the right tool for the job. They began one of the most infamous projects in DARPA history: the quest for a mechanical elephant. The end result would be capable of transporting heavy loads with servo-actuated legs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the director of DARPA heard of the project, he immediately shut it down, hoping that Congress wouldn’t hear of it and cut the agency’s funding, <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn13907-fifty-years-of-darpa-hits-misses-and-ones-to-watch/" target=_blank>according to New Scientist</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thousands of members of Air Force space and space systems operations have been selected to begin transfer to the Space Force Sept. 1.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2,410 airmen selected were part of a larger pool of more than 8,500 volunteers for transfer, many of whom are not in a space operations career field. Volunteers serving in career fields shared by the Air Force and Space Force will undergo their own selection process, scheduled in late July for officers and sometime in the fall for enlisted airmen.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those selected in these boards are expected to begin transfer on Feb. 1, 2021. Career fields shared between the Space Force and Air Force include acquisitions, intelligence, engineering, targeting and cyber specialties.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This is an exciting and historic time for these space operators, who will be some of the first members to join the Space Force,” said Lt. Gen. David “DT” Thompson, vice commander of the Space Force, in a press release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each operator transferred will be responsible for contributing ideas that will shape the Space Force in to a modern service, Thompson said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because the Air Force will cease to oversee space operations, airmen in space operations career fields who chose not to volunteer for transfer must apply for retraining in a new career field, separation or retirement, or a transition to a reserve component of the Air Force.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard will continue to execute space missions in support of the Space Force until a decision is made about the status of a Space Force reserve component.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Army soldiers and Navy sailors necessary to the Space Force’s mission will not begin transfer until fiscal years 2022-23. More details on interservice transfer are expected in fiscal 2021.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">President Donald Trump nominated four Air Force generals for new appointments on Monday, Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper announced in a DoD release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lt. Gen. Glen D. VanHerck was nominated for appointment to the rank of general and assignment as commander of NORTHCOM and NORAD at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark was nominated for assignment as superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maj. Gen. Tony D. Bauernfeind was nominated for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as vice commander of SOCOM in Washington D.C.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maj. Gen. Jeffrey A. Kruse was nominated for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as director’s advisor for military affairs in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in McLean, Va.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">VanHerck currently serves at the Pentagon as director of the Joint Staff. In this capacity, he supports the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as he advises the president and secretary of defense. If confirmed, he will replace Air Force Gen. Terrence O’Shaughnessy in overseeing responsibilities including aerospace warning and control, homeland defense, and civil support in North America.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As SOCOM’s chief of staff at Macdill Air Force Base, Fla., Bauernfeind assists the SOCOM commander and oversees personnel issues. If his appointment is confirmed, he will become the third highest ranking commander at SOCOM.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clark is the deputy chief of staff, strategic deterrence, and nuclear integration at Air Force headquarters in the Pentagon. Here he provides guidance to the Air Force secretary and chief of staff on matters relating to nuclear deterrence. If confirmed he will become the twenty-first commanding officer of the Air Force Academy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kruse serves as director for defense intelligence for warfighter support in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security at the Pentagon. He oversees intelligence programs and policies necessary for combatant commands to conduct operations. If confirmed, he will be the first to fill a new position as military advisor to the DNI.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For each general to receive their appointment, the U.S. Senate must confirm the president’s nominations.</p>
